Welcome to Cook with Lerato where I share recipes and stories with a good dose of African magic. So many new readers and members have joined us this month. Imagine waking up to magical views of the Atlas mountains, with nothing but the sound of birds chirping ever so sweetly. The aromas of sweet oranges wafting through the air, skins peeled, fruits sliced and spiced with a dusting of cinnamon and drizzled with honey. Eggs sizzling in virgin green olive oil, harvested only a few miles away, and with dash of earthy, fragrant cumin, beckoning you to sit, and devour to your heart’s content. A beautiful spread with freshly baked semolina topped khobz to scoop those eggs and pancakes with a thousand holes waiting for their fill of orange blossom and honey syrup. Freshly pressed pomegranates to cleanse the palate, all lovingly prepared for you ahead of a day, meandering through the vibrant Medina, enjoying the theatre of ‘the haggle’ for spices and treasures, before stopping for a refreshing glass of ‘atay’ - mint tea. And there’s the quiet of the desert as you breeze through, driving past the vast valleys towards the Atlas mountains. A serene repose awaits on the coast with the most pampered cats, who will perhaps inspire you to surrender to the town’s greatest blessings of generous seafood and seabreeze…
This may sound like a dream, because it is mine. However, this is in fact a summary of some of what’s in store for you at my retreats in Morocco. A dream come true that I cannot wait to share with you.
Now, who’s coming with me? There is much to do, much to see and experience, and I have curated a week-long trip filled with all my favourite activities that I know you will truly enjoy. From must-see palaces and gardens to hidden gems, learning from the locals and lots more unique experiences planned especially for us.

Highlights of our Morocco retreat
A specially curated multi city/terrain experience from the city to the desert, the mountains to the coast with hidden gems and my address book of favourites gathered over years of travel.
Stay in architectural masterpieces, from our luxurious eco-friendly Earth House, a sprawling villa overlooking the Atlas Mountains in Marrakesh and our sumptuous mud huts on the coast.
Exceptional food, with organic seasonal produce, fresh fish from the nearby coast, olives you can pick yourself and olive oil harvested just footsteps away. A generous food tour feasting at my favourite restaurants, street foods stops, the best pâtisseries and more.
Immersive cookery classes with me, at a 5-star hotel, with local Dada’s (expert cooks, Morocco’s version of African Aunties who hold all the secrets to cooking) to cooking high above the Ourika Valley with the Berber (Amazigh) locals.

Did I say 5? This reminds me of that time my editors asked for 100 recipes and I gave them close to 200 for Africana, which we subsequently had to cut down. I just don’t know when to stop.
Just like at my feasts and classes, ‘solo’ does not mean ‘alone’. Togetherness is one of the unique characteristics of our experiences. While travelling as one, you will still enjoy the freedom of your own individual choices and space.

Where am I, and what am I up to?
I am currently at home in Sussex, England. Fresh from planning a private retreat to Morocco for June/July 2024 and to celebrate my birthday. This week, I’ll be heading to the Fortnum & Mason Awards in a few days. Thank you so much for voting for me. You are such supportive superstars and I cannot thank you enough.
